Give to HU

New Students, Welcome to HU!

Congratulations on making a wise decision to enroll at HU. As an incoming student this page will help you prepare for the start of the semester. Whether you are a first-time or a transfer student, you will find useful information and online tools for completing important steps before your classes begin. The HU faculty and staff wish you the very best for the coming academic year.

First Time Students (freshmen)

As you plan for your first semester with HU, you’ll want to be sure you start out on the right foot. Students enrolling in their first semester are required to take the placement test in conjunction with academic advising, to determine the best courses for their first semester at the University. The placement test does not affect your admission status in any way. The process helps advisors recommend the most appropriate courses for you. To sign up for the placement test call the Office of Admissions at 717.901.5101 or use our online form to set up your visit. After you have completed the Placement Test, you will receive a confirmation letter and more information on Orientation. Your first semester schedule will be developed by the Registrar's Office and provided to you during Orientation.

Transfer Students

Placement Assessment

If you have greater than 30 credits and you have already successfully taken College Algebra and English Composition, you are not required to take a placement test. However, you may elect to do so, if you would like to take advantage of this academic service. Students that do not meet the criteria above need to take the placement test to determine the best courses for their first semester at the University. To sign up for the placement test, call the Office of Admissions at 717.901.5101 or use our online form to set up your visit.

Transfer Advising

If you have not already done so, please request a Transcript Evaluation to determine how your credits will transfer to HU. Afterwards, you will meet with a Transfer Advisor to review the Transcript Evaluation and develop your course schedule for your first semester at the University. During this appointment, most students will be able to complete registration materials for the first semester. To set up Transfer Advising call the Admissions Office at 717.901.5101 or use our online form to set up your visit.

Registration

Once you have completed advising and course selection, you are ready to register. Most registration activites are handled at orientation. Contact the Registrar for more information at Registrar@HarrisburgU.edu or 717.901.5101.

Financial Aid

Be sure to take advantage of financial aid opportunities from HU and other organizations. Consider setting up an advising appointment with the Office of Financial Aid Services at FinancialAid@HarrisburgU.edu or 717.901.5101 to assist you in financing tuition and related educational costs such as your laptop, books, and housing. You can get started by beginning the FAFSA form, which you received from HU when you applied for admission.

Laptop

Students enrolled in Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s degree program are required to have a laptop computer in order to complete specific course requirements. If you already have a laptop and want to continue using it at Harrisburg University, please be aware of our minimum requirements. Although students with 6-credits or less are not required to purchase a laptop, they are strongly encouraged to do so. For questions regarding your laptop purchase, contact the Office of Financial Aid Services.

You are free to purchase the laptop of your choice (as long it meets the minimum requirements above.) As a courtesy, Harrisburg University has also selected four laptops that meet our minimum network requirements. Please note, our listing of these machines does not serve as a product endorsement. You can purchase these machines through Harrisburg University's CDW-G page.

Textbooks
