Community Honors 2009 Graduates During Commencement and Partners Day
Harrisburg University of Science and Technology graduated its third class of students on May 14th and thanked the partners that invest their time, talent and treasures to the University during the 2009 Commencement Exercises and Partners Day event. Mr. James E. Nevels, non-executive chairman of the Board of Directors of The Hershey Co and founder of The Swarthmore Group, one of the largest minority-owned investment-advisory firms in the nation, addressed the 13 students of the Class of 2009. He also received the degree of Doctor of Public Service honoris causa in recognition of his exceptional commitment to education reform and social equity.
Michael Fiaschetti, Market President of Highmark Blue Shield, joined Harrisburg Mayor Steven R. Reed, and R. Timothy Weston, Esq., Chair of the Board of Trustees, in congratulating the graduates.
Additionally, Weston offered a special word about David Bass who could not be at the event. In the fall of 2005, David Bass enrolled as a Graduate Student in the Information Technology Project Management. A week later he was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"Throughout his tour David was able to continue his coursework via email and website correspondences with his professors. This perfectly illustrates the University's commitment to offering a personal approach to education taking into account each student’s situation in creating unique, comprehensive, and relevant learning plans," said Weston. "We are proud that today David will receive a certificate in Information Technology Project Management this evening. We all offer our admiration and thanks to David for his service to country, and for his abiding concurrent dedication in pursuing an education in science and technology."
